The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region is demanding answers from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) over the alleged removal and destruction of NPP posters in the Kumasi Metropolis.
The party alleges that an individual identified as the Special Assistant to the Ashanti Regional Minister removed the posters from public spaces. Ashanti Regional Organiser Dennis Kwakwa raised the concerns in a statement dated September 28, 2026.
The NPP is asking the KMA to confirm whether it authorised the alleged poster removal exercise.
“The KMA to clarify to the public whether it authorized any such exercise,” the party said.
The NPP has also called on the Ashanti Regional Minister to intervene and the Ghana Police Service to investigate the incident. The party argues that the KMA has the authority to regulate the removal of posters under its bye-laws.
“The said Special Assistant has no legal mandate whatsoever to remove posters. That mandate lies solely with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) acting through its bye-laws,” the statement said.
The NPP described the alleged removal as “criminal, undemocratic and provocative”. It also accused the Special Assistant of abusing political office.
The party further referred to the Representation of the People Law, 1992 (PNDCL 284). However, the NPP statement cites Section 27, while the official text of the law shows that Section 27 concerns registration offences. Section 38 addresses the destruction, mutilation, defacement or removal of notices exhibited under the law.
The NPP statement did not state when the alleged poster removal occurred. It also did not identify the specific locations where the posters were allegedly removed.
The party is calling for an investigation to establish whether the exercise was authorised. It has also urged its supporters and the general public to remain calm and avoid retaliation.
“We urge all NPP sympathizers and the general public to remain calm, law-abiding and not retaliate. We believe in the rule of law,” the statement said.
The allegations have not been independently established. The statement also did not include responses from the Ashanti Regional Minister, the Special Assistant or the KMA.
