Reports emerging from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) suggest that a presidential candidate of Akan descent could emerge as the party’s next flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
According to information circulating within sections of the party, some delegates and the Functional Executives Committee(FEC) are increasingly inclined towards electing an Akan candidate to lead the NDC into the 2028 presidential race.
The development comes as attention within the party turns to the succession of President John Dramani Mahama, who is constitutionally expected to leave office after completing his second term.
Four prominent NDC figures of Akan descent have so far emerged as names being discussed in connection with the party’s future leadership.
And polls are running over about who is leading in a particular region among a sections of the public.
The polls are gaining currency and fast shaping the narratives in terms of the next leader of the party.
The aspirants are Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Minister of Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku, and Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson even though the likes of Haruna Iddrissu, and Prof Joshua Alarbi are lurking in there.
The report suggests that the contest could be particularly significant, with regional considerations and the preferences of delegates expected to influence the eventual choice of the party’s next presidential candidate.
The names currently being mentioned are linked to the Eastern, Central, Ahafo and Bono regions, respectively, adding a regional dimension to the emerging succession discussions.
However, the NDC has yet to officially open the process for selecting its 2028 presidential candidate, and there has been no formal declaration by the party endorsing any of the individuals mentioned.
The discussions are therefore expected to evolve as the party moves closer to its eventual presidential primary and as more potential aspirants make their intentions known.
