National Communications Officer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has won an appeal in a defamation suit filed against him by former Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh and runningmate to Dr Mahamadu Bawumiain the 2024 general elections.
The Court of Appeal ruled in favour of Mr. Gyamfi, overturning the earlier decision in the case brought against him by Dr. Opoku Prempeh.
The suit stemmed from comments and publications made by Sammy Gyamfi, which Dr. Opoku Prempeh considered defamatory and subsequently challenged through legal action.
In its decision, the Court of Appeal found grounds to grant reliefs in favour of Mr. Gyamfi, bringing a significant development to the long-running legal dispute.
Mr. Gyamfi, who has consistently maintained that his comments were made in the discharge of his public duties and in the interest of accountability, welcomed the outcome of the appeal.
The ruling marks a major legal victory for the NDC communicator, while the details of the court’s full reasoning are expected to provide further clarity on the issues raised during the proceedings.
