The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Moses Abor, has condemned what he describes as an attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, at the Accra High Court.
According to Mr Abor, the alleged incident occurred on Wednesday morning, September 23, shortly after the MP had made submissions during a hearing of a bail application involving Salomey Awiti Bafoh.
In a statement, the NPP Regional Organiser alleged that officers believed to be from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) attempted to forcibly arrest and take away the MP from the court premises.
Mr Abor described the alleged incident as an abuse of state power and accused the government of disregarding the rule of law, justice and due process.
He maintained that the Manhyia South MP had not breached the law and described the alleged attempt to arrest him at the court as “unwarranted and needless.”
“It is very regrettable to witness such an unwarranted and needless attack on our country’s lawmaker who is in no breach of the law in the slightest way,” Mr Abor said.
The NPP Regional Organiser further accused the government and its appointees of using state institutions to intimidate members of the opposition.
He said the NPP would resist what he described as oppression and called on party stakeholders and supporters to show solidarity with both Salomey Awiti Bafoh and the Manhyia South MP.
Mr Abor urged NPP national executives, parliamentary aspirants, Members of Parliament, former government appointees, constituency organisers and party supporters to turn out in their numbers on Thursday to demonstrate their support.
The allegations contained in the statement have not been independently verified, and the reasons for the reported attempted arrest were not provided in the statement.
Mr Abor, who signed the statement in his capacity as Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the NPP, said the party would continue to oppose what he characterised as the misuse of state power against its members.
