The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested 10 students of Koforidua Technical University (KTU) in the Eastern Region for allegedly trafficking cannabis-infused drinks and ice cream during the institution’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Hall Week celebrations.

The arrests followed what NACOC described as a “meticulously coordinated intelligence-led operation” conducted during the celebrations held from Friday, July 31 to Saturday, August 1, 2026.

According to the Commission, the operation led to the arrest of the alleged leader of the group, 23-year-old Priscilla Tetteh, alongside nine other young men suspected to be involved in the production, distribution, and sale of cannabis-infused products on the university campus.

NACOC said the suspects were apprehended while allegedly selling the illicit products to students and other patrons attending the event.

Preliminary investigations, the Commission noted, suggest that the group had established an organised network involved in distributing cannabis-infused drinks and ice creams, creating what it described as a threat to public health and the safety of young people.

NACOC said the arrests represent a major disruption of an emerging criminal activity that exploits social gatherings and educational institutions to promote the use of narcotic substances.

The Commission reiterated that cannabis-infused food, beverages, and other edible products containing controlled substances remain illegal under Ghana’s laws, warning that persons involved in their production, possession, distribution, or sale will face prosecution.

NACOC expressed concern over the increasing involvement of some young people in commercialising narcotic substances under the guise of entertainment and entrepreneurship.

The Commission stressed that educational institutions must remain centres for learning, innovation, and character development, rather than environments where drug trafficking and substance abuse are allowed to thrive.

NACOC assured the public that it will continue to intensify intelligence-led operations nationwide to identify, dismantle, and prosecute individuals and networks involved in narcotics-related offences, particularly those targeting students and vulnerable groups.

The Commission has also called on parents, university authorities, student leaders, and the general public to support efforts against illicit drug activities by reporting suspected cases.

The arrested persons remain in NACOC custody and will be processed in accordance with the law.
