GEA engages stakeholders to shape 2026–2030 MSME growth strategy

The Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) has engaged key stakeholders in the enterprise development ecosystem as part of efforts to align its priorities and strengthen support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the country.

The engagement, held under the theme “Aligning Development Partnerships for Sustainable MSME Growth and Economic Transformation,” brought together representatives from the public and private sectors, development partners, business associations, financial institutions, academia and other stakeholders.

The meeting formed part of the Agency’s strategic planning process for its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, which is expected to provide a roadmap for its programmes, partnerships and institutional development over the next five years.

The engagement sought to better understand the priorities and expectations of stakeholders while identifying areas where stronger collaboration, coordination and complementary interventions could improve support for Ghanaian enterprises.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of GEA, Margaret Ansei, stressed the need for partnerships that combine the different strengths and resources available within the enterprise ecosystem.

She said development partners could provide technical expertise, financial institutions could leverage their balance sheets, government ministries could offer regulatory support, while GEA could contribute its presence and networks across the country.

According to Ms Ansei, bringing these capabilities together would help address the multiple constraints confronting enterprises seeking to grow and become more sustainable.

The discussions focused on key areas including enterprise competitiveness, access to finance, digital transformation, market access, skills development, innovation, sustainability, institutional strengthening and inclusive entrepreneurship.

Stakeholders also reflected on persistent challenges within Ghana’s MSME sector and explored how GEA and its partners could coordinate their interventions more effectively.

Ms Ansei said the Agency’s strategic priorities should not be developed in isolation but should reflect the needs and realities of businesses and institutions operating within the enterprise ecosystem.

She noted that the success of the Agency’s next strategic cycle would be measured increasingly by the impact and sustainability of the enterprises it supports rather than simply the number of programmes implemented.

“GEA’s ambition for this period is to be judged less by the number of programmes we run and more by the durability of the enterprises that pass through them. That is a harder standard, and a fairer one,” she said.

The 2026–2030 Strategic Plan is therefore expected to place emphasis on institutional capacity, sharper strategic focus, stronger partnerships and improved coordination to ensure that GEA’s programmes translate into meaningful and sustainable outcomes for Ghanaian businesses.

The Board Chairman of GEA, Prof Nathaniel Boso, also underscored the importance of achieving greater alignment among stakeholders within the enterprise development ecosystem.

He said collaboration should go beyond institutions merely operating alongside one another and should instead be based on a shared understanding of the gaps within Ghana’s enterprise ecosystem and coordinated interventions to address them.

By aligning its priorities with those of its partners and stakeholders, GEA aims to build a more responsive and effective institution capable of delivering more effectively on its mandate to promote and develop the MSME sector.

The Strategic Plan will ultimately serve as the Agency’s roadmap towards 2030, guiding its programmes, partnerships and institutional reforms while supporting stronger enterprise outcomes and contributing to sustainable economic transformation.
