President John Dramani Mahama has described Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as a visionary whose pursuit of liberty, Pan-African unity and self-reliance continues to shape the country’s national identity.
In a message to mark Founder’s Day on Monday, September 21, President Mahama said Nkrumah’s declaration on the capacity of Africans to manage their own affairs remains a source of national pride.
“His bold declaration that “the black man is capable of managing his own affairs” remains the bedrock of our national pride,” President Mahama said.
He said Founder’s Day provided an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on Nkrumah’s contribution to the country and draw inspiration from his vision as they work towards national development.
President Mahama also reminded Ghanaians at home and in the diaspora that the task of nation-building remains incomplete.
“Let us draw strength from Osagyefo’s vision and contribute in our own way to attaining the Resetting Ghana Agenda,” he said.
He urged citizens to rise above division, embrace selfless patriotism and work towards economic freedom and social justice.
“Just as Nkrumah fought for our political independence, we have a collective duty today to build a prosperous, equitable, and resilient Ghana,” he stated.
Founder’s Day is observed on September 21 to commemorate the birthday of Kwame Nkrumah, who was born in 1909. Nkrumah became Ghana’s first Prime Minister and later its first President and played a central role in the country’s independence struggle.
