Land preparation has begun for the construction and equipping of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The project, according to Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, is expected to replace the hospital’s dilapidated Maternity Unit and expand access to specialised maternal and child healthcare services.
In a Facebook post, Kwakye Ofosu said the project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s investment in major health infrastructure.
“President Mahama is back with investments in major, world-class health infrastructure,” he wrote.
He added, “Land preparation has begun for the construction and equipping of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to replace the delapidated Maternity Unit.”
The new facility will include Obstetrics and Gynaecology Wards, Labour and Delivery Suites, Operating Theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
It will also house an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, Antenatal and Postnatal Clinics, Fertility and Reproductive Health Clinics, Breastfeeding and Family Planning Units, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.
Other planned facilities include a Diagnostic Imaging Department, laboratory and blood bank facilities, a Pharmacy Department, Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Units, as well as teaching, research and conference facilities.
The development is intended to provide Korle Bu with a purpose-built facility for maternal and child healthcare, with specialised departments and critical care units under one block.
