Ghana’s political and agricultural communities are mourning the death of former Minister for Food and Agriculture and former Choggu/Tishigu Member of Parliament, Alhaji Ibrahim Adam.
Alhaji Ibrahim Adam reportedly died on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been officially disclosed by his family.
Tributes have begun pouring in for the veteran politician and agricultural expert, who served Ghana in various capacities during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era and the early years of the Fourth Republic.
Among those to mourn his passing was the Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Atta Issah, who described the late former minister as a mentor whose wisdom and dedication to public service had made a lasting impact.
In a tribute, Mr Issah said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Alhaji Ibrahim Adam and extended his condolences to the bereaved family, the people of the Northern Region and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He said he had personally benefited from the former minister’s “wisdom, dedication, and service,” and prayed for Allah’s mercy and for his soul to be received into Jannah.
Before entering frontline politics, Ibrahim Adam built a career as an agricultural professional.
An animal scientist and agricultural expert, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and undertook further professional training in areas including rice production, administration and management.
His professional career included serving as an Assistant Farm Manager at Nasia Farms and later as Secretary General of the Tamale Rice Growers Association.
His extensive experience in agriculture subsequently took him into public service, where he held a number of positions within the agricultural sector during the PNDC administration.
He served as Deputy Secretary for Agriculture, with responsibility for crops, before rising to become Secretary for Agriculture.
He later became Minister for Food and Agriculture under the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
After his service in the executive, Ibrahim Adam transitioned into parliamentary politics.
He represented the Choggu/Tishigu Constituency in Parliament from 1997 to 2001, where he continued his involvement in national development and public affairs.
His contribution to Ghana’s public sector extended beyond politics.
He subsequently served as Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), one of the country’s major institutions supporting agricultural financing and development.
His death brings to an end a career that spanned several decades and cut across agricultural administration, government, Parliament and public-sector leadership.
Alhaji Ibrahim Adam is being remembered by colleagues, political actors and members of the agricultural community for his contribution to Ghana’s agricultural development and his years of service to the country.
