Ghana Aids Commission has an estimated 337,435 people living with HIV, according to the latest national HIV estimates, highlighting continued efforts to expand prevention, testing, and treatment services across the country.

The figures show that adults aged 15 years and above account for the majority of people living with HIV, with an estimated 315,513 cases. Young people aged 10 to 19 years account for 19,528 cases, while children aged 0 to 14 years represent 21,922 cases.

Among adults, people aged 15 to 49 years make up the largest proportion, with 242,638 cases, while those aged 50 years and above account for 72,875 cases.

Young people aged 15 to 24 years represent 33,317 cases.

The estimates also indicate that Ghana recorded 13,951 new HIV infections during the reporting period.

Adults aged 15 years and above accounted for 12,724 new infections, while children aged 0 to 14 years recorded 1,227 infections.

Within the adult population, the highest number of new infections was recorded among people aged 15 to 49 years, with 11,701 cases. Young people aged 15 to 24 years accounted for 3,835 new infections, while those aged 50 years and above recorded 1,023 cases.

The country also recorded 12,051 AIDS-related deaths.

Adults aged 15 years and above accounted for 10,533 deaths, while children aged 0 to 14 years recorded 1,518 deaths.

Among adults, the highest number of deaths occurred within the 15 to 49 age group, with 7,515 cases, followed by those aged 50 years and above with 3,018 deaths.

The estimates show an adult HIV prevalence rate of 1.4 per cent among people aged 15 to 49 years.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage among adults aged 15 years and above stands at 57.6 per cent, while ART coverage among children aged 0 to 14 years is 39.6 per cent.

Coverage for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services remains high, with 98.9 per cent coverage, reflecting significant progress in preventing new HIV infections among infants.

Ghana’s progress towards the global 95-95-95 HIV targets shows that 70 per cent of people living with HIV are estimated to know their status, 81 per cent of those diagnosed are receiving treatment, and 92 per cent of people on treatment have achieved viral suppression.

The figures underline both the progress made in HIV prevention and treatment efforts and the continued need to improve testing, treatment access, and viral suppression, particularly among children, adolescents, and young people.

Ghana Aids Commission and partners continue to emphasise the importance of early testing, adherence to treatment, and sustained prevention programmes to reduce new infections and AIDS-related deaths in Ghana.
