Residents in parts of the Greater Accra Region are expected to experience temporary disruptions in water supply as Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) begins major maintenance works on key transmission pipelines linking Kpong and Tema.

The exercise, scheduled from Thursday, August 6 to Saturday, August 8, 2026, will involve the replacement of weak sections on the 21-inch and 42-inch pipelines as part of efforts to strengthen the reliability of the water supply system.

GWL said engineering inspections identified more than 300 metres of damaged pipeline sections that require replacement to prevent possible failures, reduce water losses and improve the efficiency of the network.

To allow the work to proceed, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down, while five sections of the transmission lines are isolated for repairs. The company warned that customers connected to the Kpong Water Supply System may experience reduced pressure or temporary interruptions during the period.

Affected areas include parts of eastern Accra and surrounding communities such as Ashaiman, Tema, Kpone, Dawhenya, Prampram, Spintex, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie, Kpong, Akuse, Somanya and Atimpoku, among others.

Ghana Water said its technical teams will work continuously throughout the maintenance period to complete the project on schedule and restore normal supply as quickly as possible.

The company has advised affected households to store enough water before the commencement of the works and manage available supplies carefully during the interruption.

Critical institutions, including hospitals and other essential service providers, have also been encouraged to make contingency arrangements, with GWL indicating that water tankers will be deployed to support selected facilities where necessary.

The company described the intervention as a long-term investment aimed at reducing pipeline bursts, limiting emergency shutdowns and improving the stability of water supply along the Tema and eastern corridor areas.

GWL has assured customers that updates on the progress of the works will be communicated through its official channels, with further notice to be issued once normal supply is fully restored.
