The government has announced plans to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers across the country as part of efforts to improve their welfare and attract educators to underserved communities.
Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu, who announced the initiative during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, 2026, said the intervention forms part of the government’s broader strategy to improve accommodation for teachers.
He said the initiative would complement an existing 20 per cent allowance for teachers who accept postings to rural areas.
“We intend to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers all across the country,” Mr Iddrisu said.
According to the Minister, the project will be implemented with the involvement of the District Assemblies Common Fund to ensure that delivery is decentralised to the regional and district levels.
He indicated that the Ministry of Education would also provide support towards the implementation of the programme.
The Minister stressed that teachers remain central to improving educational outcomes and managing schools effectively, making their welfare a priority for the government.
“Therefore, our government places priority on the motivation and well-being of teachers,” he said.
The planned housing programme is expected to address accommodation challenges confronting teachers, particularly those posted to rural and underserved parts of the country.
