The government is set to establish new community day senior high schools in Nima and Kasoa as part of efforts to expand access to secondary education and address growing pressure on existing schools.
Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu disclosed the plan during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, 2026.
According to the Minister, the schools will be developed under the government’s STARR-J project, which is expected to support the expansion and improvement of secondary education infrastructure across the country.
He explained that the government’s preference for community day schools comes amid increasing demands from Members of Parliament for existing day schools in their constituencies to be converted into boarding institutions.
“It is the view of President Mahama that we should encourage the establishment of community day care schools,” Mr Iddrisu said.
“So we’ll build one of that in Nima, Ayawasu, and one in Kasoa as part of the STAR-J project,” he added.
The initiative forms part of a wider infrastructure programme that will target more than 200 senior high, technical and vocational institutions.
Under the programme, the government also plans to rehabilitate and expand selected schools with additional classrooms, dormitories and laboratories.
The Education Minister said the intervention is necessary to address infrastructure deficits resulting from the significant increase in secondary school enrolment following the introduction of the Free Senior High School programme.
The government also intends to upgrade 30 Category C schools to Category B status and move 20 Category B schools to Category A under the programme.
