The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has announced the approval of its Consumer and Public Complaints Procedure Guidelines by its Governing Board, as part of efforts to strengthen consumer protection in Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
The Chief Executive of the NPA, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, made the announcement during the climax of the Authority’s 2026 Consumer Week celebration at Kasoa Ofaakor Park in the Central Region on Thursday.
Held under the theme, “Safe Downstream, Confident Consumers,” the celebration focused on promoting safety and building public confidence in the petroleum downstream industry.
Mr Tameklo also cautioned the public against rushing to accident scenes involving fuel tankers to siphon fuel, warning that such actions could result in severe injuries or death from possible explosions.
He described fuel siphoning as illegal and warned that those involved would be held accountable under the law.
In a keynote address delivered on his behalf, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, acknowledged that consumers had faced a difficult year at the fuel pumps.
He attributed the pressure on fuel prices to several factors, including conflict in the Middle East, disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and a slight weakening of the cedi in the third quarter.
Dr Jinapor said the government absorbed GH¢2 per litre of the diesel price in August and extended the relief into September to cushion consumers against rising costs.
He further noted that Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and Sentuo Oil had supplied petroleum marketers at previous prices when a sharp increase in fuel prices was anticipated in October.
For her part, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, said consumer confidence in the petroleum sector must be earned through prioritising safety.
The celebration also featured entertainment performances by Ghanaian music duo DopeNation and gospel musician Perez Muzik, who thrilled participants with their songs.
Students were also engaged in a dancing competition, adding to the entertainment activities at the event.
