Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) says it will resume spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a rise in the dam’s water level caused by heavy rains.

According to GWL, the water level has reached 45.2 feet, with continued rainfall in the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries pushing the dam closer to its 46-foot threshold.

In a statement on Monday, September 7, GWL said the planned spillage is a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the dam.

“As the level is approaching the 46-foot threshold, GWL will resume spillage from Wednesday, 9 September 2026, as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam.”

The company has consequently directed residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate their communities ahead of the spillage.

“All Residents living downstream of the Weija Dam are to evacuate the area before any eventuality.”

GWL also urged residents to remain alert, comply with official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could expose them to danger.

The company has called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), District Assemblies, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders to take precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuation.

Communities identified as potentially affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding communities.

GWL said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates to the public.

The announcement comes amid renewed rainfall in parts of the Densu River basin, raising concerns about possible flooding downstream of the dam if water levels continue to rise.
