Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has announced that Ghana is making significant strides to establish itself as a regional hub for electric vehicles (EVs), textiles, garments, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Addressing the media at the Government Accountability Series on January 21, 2026, the Minister for highlighted the importance of clear policies for attracting investors.
According to the Minister, draft policies have now been developed for textiles and garments, pharmaceutical manufacturing, special economic zones, and automotive component manufacturing.
She also emphasized the need to update the Ghana Automotive Development Policy to include EVs, two- and three-wheelers, noting that they are “good, environmentally friendly and cost effective.”
“We know that EVs is the thing, the new child on the block and so we need a policy to govern it,” she said.
Ghana is actively engaging Chinese investors to establish EV assembly plants. Ofosu-Adjare confirmed,
“The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, led by myself, was able to sign an MOU with Shenzhen New Jekyll of China for the establishment of an EV assembly plant. They are in Ghana. They have acquired their land. Development is far advanced for the factory to start.”
The initiative forms part of a broader rapid industrialization for jobs programme, aimed at generating employment, boosting value addition for domestic and export markets, and enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness in global trade.
