The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, says major narcotics seizures linked to Ghana between 2025 and September 2026 have a combined estimated street value exceeding US$1 billion.
During a media briefing, Nana Boakye stated that the NPP has identified 12 major cases involving Ghanaian territory, nationals or consignments traced to Ghana, with seizures recorded both in Ghana and abroad.
Among them is the March 4, 2025 seizure at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast, where 3,319.66 kilogrammes of cocaine, concealed under heaps of sand in a tipper truck, were intercepted. The party estimates the street value at US$350 million.
The NPP also cited a separate seizure of about 120 slabs of cocaine on the Takoradi-Cape Coast Highway in March 2025, valued at approximately US$150 million.
Other cases include the seizure of 89.74 kilogrammes of cocaine at the Swissport Cargo Terminal at Kotoka International Airport in April 2025 and 866 parcels of suspected cocaine concealed in sacks of gari at Tema Harbour in August 2026.
International seizures cited by the party include 250 kilogrammes of cocaine intercepted in the Netherlands, 1.158 tonnes of suspected cocaine identified in Belgium, 320 kilogrammes of methamphetamine seized in Australia and nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine intercepted in France in September 2026 from a container originating from Ghana.
Nana Boakye said the scale of the seizures points to a wider concern about Ghana’s role in the international narcotics trade.
“The total estimated street value of major narcotics seizures linked to Ghana between 2025 and September 2026 exceeds US$1 billion.”
He added, “The pattern is unmistakable, Ghana is being used as a transit hub.”
The NPP is calling for investigations into the cases and greater scrutiny of Ghana’s ports, airports, roads and cargo screening systems.
