FWSC denies reports on salary deductions for striking teachers

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has denied reports that its Chief Executive, Dr. George Smith-Graham, directed that the salaries of teachers participating in the ongoing strike be deducted for every day they remain away from work.

The Commission said comments attributed to Dr. Smith-Graham in a media report were not made by him and do not represent the FWSC’s position on the industrial action involving the three pre-tertiary teacher unions.

In a statement, the FWSC said the report had generated public interest and could create a misleading impression about the Commission’s position on the ongoing strike.

“The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission wishes to state that our Chief Executive did not make the comments attributed to him in the said media report,” the statement said.

The Commission has therefore urged the public and the media to disregard the reported comments and any conclusions drawn from them.

“The FWSC therefore respectfully appeals to the public and the media to disregard the purported comments and any conclusions drawn from them, as they do not represent a statement made by the Chief Executive or a position taken by the Commission in relation to the ongoing teachers’ strike,” it added.

The FWSC said its current engagement with the three teacher unions is focused on dialogue and negotiations aimed at addressing outstanding issues relating to their collective agreement and conditions of service.

As part of the process, the Commission met the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

The meeting was chaired by Dr Smith-Graham and attended by GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah, NAGRAT President Jacob Anaba and PRETAG President King Awudu Ali, together with other union leaders.

According to the FWSC, the engagement provided an opportunity for the Commission and the unions to discuss the outstanding issues and demands raised by the teacher unions.

The Commission has reiterated its commitment to constructive engagement with the teacher unions and other relevant stakeholders towards finding a mutually acceptable and sustainable resolution to the outstanding issues.
