The Flood Mitigation Task Force has identified several developments at Oyarifa in the Greater Accra Region that have disrupted natural water channels and altered drainage patterns as part of ongoing efforts to address the causes of flooding in affected communities.
During an inspection of flood-prone areas, the Task Force discovered that some developers had constructed structures over natural waterways, including apartments built directly on a water channel.
The team also observed that other nearby developments had changed the natural flow of water, contributing to drainage challenges in the area.
Several structures considered to have been improperly sited have been identified and marked for demolition to help restore blocked water pathways.
In the New York area of Oyarifa, the Task Force found a retention wall under construction which had diverted the natural movement of water. Authorities noted that the intervention contributed to flooding in areas that had previously not experienced such challenges.
The inspection forms part of government’s broader post-flood mitigation strategy aimed at identifying and addressing human activities that worsen flooding, while improving drainage systems and building climate-resilient communities.
The Task Force is expected to continue assessments in other affected areas to restore natural drainage channels and prevent future flooding incidents.
