FDA seizes fishes at Tema New Town over unhygienic processing conditions

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), in collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and the Ghana Police Service, has seized fish products processed under unhygienic conditions at Tema New Town following concerns over unsafe handling practices.

The action was triggered by a viral video showing individuals smoking, drying and salting fish in an environment surrounded by waste, raising concerns about possible contamination and the safety of products being sold to consumers.

A rapid response team from the FDA visited the area on Monday, July 27, to assess the situation and confiscated fish that had been exposed to conditions deemed unsuitable for human consumption. The processors were also educated on the health risks associated with poor hygiene during food preparation.

The development comes weeks after the June 29 floods that affected parts of Tema and a two-day cleanup exercise announced by President John Dramani Mahama to clear flood-related waste and improve sanitation. However, sections of the Tema New Town coastline continue to struggle with refuse accumulation, with garbage still found close to fish drying areas.

Residents and fish processors say the coastline remains an important centre for fishing activities and livelihoods, but the persistent sanitation challenges are threatening public confidence in fish products from the area.

The FDA said similar cases have occurred in the past and that it will continue working with relevant institutions to promote safer processing methods. The Authority also announced plans to engage fish processors and traders in coastal communities on proper hygiene practices while strengthening monitoring and enforcement.

The public has been advised to buy smoked and dried fish from reliable sources, inspect products before purchase and avoid those with unusual colour, bad odour or signs of spoilage. Consumers are also encouraged to wash and cook dried fish thoroughly before consumption.

The FDA assured the public that efforts are ongoing to remove unsafe food products from circulation and improve food safety standards.

“Your Well-being, Our Priority,” the Authority stated, urging consumers to remain cautious and report any suspected cases of unsafe food handling.
