The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested four individuals in connection with violent clashes that erupted during a burial ceremony in Asamankese on Sunday, October 26.
The confrontation, which involved supporters of the embattled chief Osabarima Adu Darko II and members of the rival Akua Korang Akwamu Royal Family, left six civilians and three police officers injured and saw police vehicles vandalized.
Police, acting on intelligence that some youth were planning to disrupt the funeral rites, recovered one single-barrel gun, 84 live cartridges, seven cutlasses, and two knives from a room near the palace.
“Police had information that some people were conveying guns and Cartridges into a room near the Chiefs palace and subsequently dispatched personnel to the scene for their arrest leading to the retrieval of One (1) single barrel gun, Eighty- Four (84) live AAA cartridges, Seven (7) cutlasses and two (2) knives.”
The suspects—Isaac Ntim Nana Yaw Zenyo, Bismark K. K. Adam, and Buaben Richard, among others—were detained while investigations continue.
According to the police, the unrest escalated when agitated youths attacked officers with stones, blocked roads, and fired indiscriminately, claiming the burial of six royals in the royal cemetery was illegitimate. The victims are currently receiving treatment at Asamankese Government Hospital.
The police have intensified patrols in the town to restore order and ensure public safety.
