Nearly 400 people, mostly from communities within the Damang Gold Mine catchment area, have entered various stages of recruitment within the first four months of operations by Damang Gold Mine Limited (DGML), signalling an early push by the indigenous Ghanaian-owned company to deliver on its employment and community development commitments.
Of the 400 candidates in the recruitment pipeline, 180 have already been employed and are currently working at the mine, while another 135 successful candidates are at different stages of the employment process, including pre-employment medical examinations and induction.
An additional 85 candidates have completed interviews and are awaiting the outcome.
The positions cover a range of areas, including maintenance, heavy-duty driving, security and general operations, as DGML continues to build its workforce after taking over responsibility for the Damang Mine on April 18, 2026.
The recruitment drive has been welcomed by chiefs, opinion leaders and youth representatives in the mine’s catchment communities, who believe the development provides an early indication that indigenous ownership could translate into greater local participation in the economic benefits of mining.
Under an agreement with DGML, 60 percent of the company’s workforce is expected to be drawn from communities within the mine’s catchment area, while the remaining 40 percent will be recruited externally, including from employees’ wards, corporate sources and other parts of Ghana.
Speaking at a press conference on behalf of the chiefs, opinion leaders and catchment youth, the Chief of the Bosomtwi Divisional Council, Nana Kwabena Amponsah IV, said the communities were encouraged by the employment figures recorded during DGML’s first few months of operation.
He said the involvement of Ghanaian professionals in key positions within the mine was equally encouraging, describing it as evidence that Ghanaian workers could occupy meaningful positions across different levels of the mining industry.
For communities that have lived alongside mining operations for more than three decades, local employment remains a major concern. They have consistently argued that the mineral resources extracted from their communities should generate tangible economic opportunities for people living in areas affected by mining.
The communities, however, say the benefits of local employment should extend beyond the immediate acquisition of jobs.
They are calling on DGML to invest in sustained skills development, training and career progression so that residents can build long-term careers within the mining industry.
They are also urging the company to increase opportunities for local businesses and contractors to participate in procurement and supply activities as the mine expands.
According to the communities, indigenous ownership should translate into broader economic participation for Ghanaian workers, professionals, suppliers, contractors and businesses, rather than being limited to ownership of the mining asset.
The communities also cited progress on a number of infrastructure projects announced during the transition as evidence that some of DGML’s commitments are moving from plans to implementation.
Among the projects is a proposed airstrip at the Huni waste dump.
DGML has reportedly completed the design for the facility, with initial earthworks already underway.
The project has also entered the regulatory engagement stage, with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipal Assembly invited to inspect the site.
The communities welcomed the engagement with the relevant institutions, noting that an airstrip requires extensive technical, safety, planning and regulatory considerations.
The proposed facility is expected to support the operational needs of the mine while potentially improving connectivity and stimulating wider economic activity in the area.
Road infrastructure has also seen activity, particularly along the Damang-Subri section of the Damang-Subri-Praso-Cape Coast road corridor.
Initial works have included clearing sections of the road corridor, as well as cutting and filling with suitable materials.
Culverts have also been constructed in areas prone to waterlogging to improve drainage and reduce flooding during the rainy season.
The communities regard the road corridor as strategically important because it links mining communities with other population centres and commercial destinations.
They believe improved roads will reduce transportation difficulties, facilitate the movement of people and goods, improve access to markets and public services, and stimulate economic activity.
The communities are therefore calling for continued collaboration among DGML, the government and relevant agencies to ensure that work on the wider road corridor is completed.
DGML is also preparing to construct standard astroturf at Subri, Damang and Huni Valley.
The process began with the company requesting land from the traditional authorities for the three projects.
The chiefs and community authorities have since made land available.
A consultant being considered for the projects visited the proposed sites in July to assess their suitability and undertake preliminary work.
DGML has subsequently indicated that the contractor is expected to mobilise a team to begin construction by the middle of August.
The communities, particularly young people, see the proposed facilities as an important investment in recreation, football development and youth engagement.
They believe the parks could provide opportunities for talent identification, training and community sporting programmes.
Beyond employment and infrastructure, the chiefs and community representatives identified DGML’s approach to community engagement as one of the more significant developments since the transition.
Nana Amponsah said the relationship between mining companies and host communities was critical to the sustainability of mining operations.
“A sustainable mining operation cannot exist independently of the communities that host it,” he said, stressing the importance of mutual respect, transparency, continuous dialogue and recognition of the interests of both sides.
The communities have welcomed engagements between DGML, Nananom and community representatives through the Social Responsibility Forum and other established platforms.
Discussions have focused broadly on sustainable community relations, local employment and economic opportunities, as well as community development, including plans for a proposed Development Foundation.
The communities said they were encouraged that discussions were being documented through mutually agreed frameworks, which they believe could improve accountability and ensure that commitments are sustained beyond individual meetings or changes in personnel.
The transition to DGML on April 18 generated significant expectations among communities that have experienced both the economic opportunities and challenges associated with mining for more than three decades.
Their longstanding concerns include local employment, infrastructure, support for businesses, community participation and the establishment of reliable channels for dialogue with mine management.
Four months into the new arrangement, community leaders believe the early implementation of some commitments provides grounds for cautious optimism.
They have nevertheless stressed that the progress recorded so far should be viewed as the beginning of a longer-term relationship rather than the resolution of all outstanding issues.
The chiefs are calling for the commitments made by DGML to be fully implemented throughout the life of the mine, with continued transparency and engagement involving Nananom, youth representatives and other community stakeholders.
They also want qualified residents to continue receiving priority consideration for employment while local businesses and contractors are given meaningful opportunities to participate in the mine’s supply chain.
The communities further want infrastructure projects to progress from preparatory works to completed facilities that deliver measurable improvements in living conditions.
They also called on the government, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to support responsible indigenous participation in Ghana’s mining sector.
Nana Amponsah said the communities were prepared to cooperate with DGML provided the relationship remained grounded in mutual respect, transparency, local participation, responsible mining and sustainable development.
He described the developments since April as the beginning of a new chapter between the Damang Mine and its host communities.
For the communities, the ultimate measure of DGML’s success will go beyond gold production.
They say it should also be reflected in the number of local people securing sustainable employment, the growth of businesses around the mine, the delivery of critical infrastructure, the development of young people and the extent to which host communities are involved in shaping the future of the operation.
If the current momentum is sustained, the communities believe the Damang experience could become an important example of how indigenous ownership, local employment, infrastructure development and structured community engagement can combine to create broader and more sustainable benefits from Ghana’s mineral resources.
