The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has renewed its appeal to the Government of Ghana to abolish the 16 per cent tax on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), arguing that the move would make the product more affordable and encourage greater adoption across the country.
The call was made by COMAC Board Chairman and Managing Director of Trinity Oil, Gabriel Kumi, during a panel discussion at the 7th Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GHiPCON) held in Accra.
Mr. Kumi said reducing the tax burden on LPG would help lower prices for consumers, increase demand and support efforts to promote cleaner cooking fuels in Ghana.
He pointed to Côte d’Ivoire as an example, noting that the neighbouring country had removed taxes on LPG and introduced subsidies for rural households, a policy he said has significantly increased consumption.
According to him, Côte d’Ivoire currently consumes about 700,000 metric tonnes of LPG annually, nearly double Ghana’s estimated 350,000 metric tonnes.
Mr. Kumi argued that adopting similar policies would make LPG more accessible to households, particularly in rural communities, while supporting the government’s clean energy and environmental objectives.
COMAC has consistently advocated measures to expand LPG usage, maintaining that affordable pricing is essential to reducing reliance on charcoal and firewood, improving public health and protecting the environment.
