The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has begun discussions with the management of the Korle- Bu Teaching Hospital in the Greater Accra Region on plans to construct a modern Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan Unit and expand the hospital’s Radiotherapy Unit.

The engagement focused on strategies and implementation arrangements for the proposed healthcare infrastructure projects, which are expected to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment services in Ghana.

The planned PET Scan Unit will enhance the country’s capacity for advanced medical imaging, while the expansion of the Radiotherapy Unit is expected to increase access to specialised cancer treatment for patients.

The initiative forms part of GMTF’s broader efforts to support the prevention and treatment of Non-Communicable Diseases, particularly cancer, by investing in critical healthcare infrastructure and improving access to quality medical services.

The Trust Fund’s Administrator, Adwoa Oboubia Darko-Opoku said the collaboration with Korle- Bu Teaching Hospital represents a significant step towards strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system and ensuring that more Ghanaians benefit from advanced, life-saving medical care.

According to her, the project is expected to reduce the burden on patients seeking specialised cancer services and contribute to the development of a more resilient and sustainable healthcare system.
