Bulsa North disability community raises alarm over unpaid support fund

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Bulsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region say they are facing increasing hardship due to what they describe as prolonged inaction over the release of disability support funds.

The affected persons claim they have not received any disbursement from the Disability Fund since 2025, leaving many members of the community without financial assistance for healthcare, education, and income-generating activities.

Former Assembly Member for Sandema and disability advocate, Godwin Abonaampo, said several attempts to get authorities to address the situation have not yielded the expected outcome.

He explained that the fund serves as a critical lifeline for many persons with disabilities, especially those who depend on it to improve their livelihoods.

“From 2025 till now, nothing has come to PWDs in Bulsa North. Life is very hard for us. We are suffering.”

Mr. Abonaampo alleged that concerns raised by the PWD community regarding the management of the fund had not been properly addressed. He claimed that the PWD Management Committee had faced difficulties accessing relevant financial information and monitoring the use of the funds.

He said petitions had been submitted to the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Atanga Donatus, and the Bulsa North Municipal Chief Executive, Solomon Akogti, but the group was yet to receive a satisfactory response.

A member of the PWD Management Committee, who spoke to GHOne News on phone, confirmed that beneficiaries had gone for several months without receiving support.

According to the committee member, the situation has affected people who rely on the fund for medical needs, educational support and small-scale businesses.

“We are working hard to ensure the funds are released to the beneficiaries as soon as possible.”

The concerns have triggered renewed calls for accountability and urgent intervention from authorities responsible for overseeing the Disability Fund.

The PWD community is appealing to the Department of Social Welfare, the Municipal Assembly and other relevant stakeholders to resolve the matter and ensure that intended beneficiaries receive the support without further delay.
