Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as Awuche and widely regarded as Ghana’s tallest man, has died after battling health complications linked to gigantism.
The 33-year-old passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving specialist treatment following a referral from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.
His death comes just weeks after businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama pledged to cover the full cost of his medical treatment and surgery following a public appeal for financial assistance.
Earlier this month, concerns grew over Awuche’s condition after doctors initially considered amputating his left leg because of a severe infection. However, following a comprehensive review at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, the medical team decided against the procedure.
Confirming the support at the time, Ibrahim Mahama’s aide, Rafik Mahama, said, “Mr Ibrahim Mahama has pledged to fully cover Awuche’s hospital bills, including the costs of his medical treatment and surgery.”
A native of Gambaga in the North East Region, Awuche became a familiar figure across Ghana because of his extraordinary height, which was widely reported to be over seven feet. His struggle with gigantism and inability to afford specialised healthcare attracted national attention and prompted an outpouring of public support.
News of his passing has sparked widespread tributes on social media, with many Ghanaians mourning a man whose life brought greater awareness to the challenges faced by people living with rare medical conditions. The exact cause of his death has not yet been officially disclosed.
