A total of 34 candidates have been cleared to contest for 11 regional executive positions in the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming Ashanti Regional elections.
The candidates were approved after a two-day vetting exercise, during which 35 aspirants appeared before the Vetting Committee. However, one candidate seeking the position of Deputy Regional Secretary later withdrew from the race.
The elections are expected to be keenly contested, with close competitions emerging for some key positions.
The Regional Chairman and Communication Officer positions will each feature two candidates competing head-to-head.
The positions of First Vice Chairman, Youth Organiser and Nasara Organiser have attracted the highest number of contenders, with four candidates each vying for the respective roles.
Meanwhile, three candidates are contesting for each of the positions of Second Vice Chairman, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Organiser, Women’s Organiser and Treasurer.
The successful completion of the vetting process has paved the way for the regional executive elections scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Chairperson of the Vetting Committee, Rita Talata Asobayire, described the process as successful and urged all candidates to conduct their campaigns with decorum.
She encouraged aspirants and their supporters to avoid insults and focus on promoting ideas that would strengthen unity and progress within the party.
The election is expected to determine the new leadership team that will oversee the affairs of the NPP in the Ashanti Region.
