The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders and other occupants at parts of Agbogbloshie, including the area popularly known as the Nzema Market, until August 28, 2026, to vacate the premises.
The move is to clear the way for the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Market as part of the Assembly’s redevelopment plans for the area.
The eviction notice was served on Tuesday, August 4, with the Assembly warning that structures on the designated sites will be removed after the deadline.
In a statement shared on Facebook on Monday, August 10, the AMA identified the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, Nzema Market and sections of the Yam Market among the areas affected by the project.
The Assembly said traders and commercial operators displaced by the redevelopment will be moved to an alternative site it has prepared for them.
The planned exercise follows consultations involving traditional leaders, market associations, traders and community representatives on the proposed redevelopment and relocation arrangements.
As part of the preparations, the AMA has already marked structures within the project area. It also began a public education campaign on August 5 to brief traders, residents and community leaders on the project and the planned clearance.
The Assembly said the consultations and sensitisation efforts are intended to facilitate an orderly transition ahead of the redevelopment.
