Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, has reportedly passed away.
The NPP legislator is said to have died from a suspected heart attack on Monday, July 7, 2025.
His sudden death comes in the midst of ongoing legal battles over his election to Parliament.
Mr. Kumi had been accused of defying a court injunction that barred him from being sworn in as MP for Akwatia due to a legal challenge over the December 2024 election results.
The injunction was secured by his main opponent, Henry Boakye-Yiadom of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who disputed the outcome and cited electoral irregularities.
Despite the court order, Mr. Kumi went ahead with his swearing-in on January 7, 2025. His legal team’s attempts to overturn the injunction were unsuccessful, with the court upholding the validity of the challenge.
The legal dispute remained unresolved, and Mr. Kumi’s repeated absence from court led to the bench warrant issued by Justice Senyo Amedahe.

Mr. Kumi was serving his first term as MP for Akwatia, one of the most hotly contested constituencies in the 2024 elections.
