The Volta Region Students Association of Ghana at the Ghana Communication Technology University (VORSAG-GCTU) has declared its support for Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu’s bid to contest the National Chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Association described his decision to enter the race as “the right decision at the right time” and a bold step towards shaping the future of the party.
In a statement read by Charles Akpasu Assau, Founding President of VORSAG-GCTU and former Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Communication Technology University Student Representative Council (SRC), the student body highlighted Dr. Opong-Fosu’s longstanding support for student organisations and his contribution to human development.
Mr Assau said Dr. Opong-Fosu’s involvement as an External Patron of student organisations demonstrated his commitment to mentoring and developing young people.
According to him, the Association sees the former minister’s decision to contest the NDC chairmanship as an opportunity to strengthen the connection between experienced party leadership and emerging youth activists.
“Leadership should never be measured only by the position you occupy,” Mr Assau said.
“Leadership should also be measured by the people you develop and the institutions you help strengthen.”
He added that experienced leaders who invested in young people were helping to build the next generation of leadership.
“ When experienced leaders invest in young people, they are not simply helping the youth of today—they are strengthening the leadership of tomorrow,” he said.
Mr Assau also expressed support for Dr. Opong-Fosu’s campaign principle, “Until everyone counts, no one counts,” saying the Association believed in his vision for transforming party management.
He said VORSAG-GCTU was confident that Dr. Opong-Fosu’s public administration experience would bring valuable experience to the NDC’s leadership as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections and beyond.
The Association consequently reaffirmed its support for his decision to contest the National Chairmanship and encouraged delegates to consider his record of public service, youth development and institutional engagement.
