Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, will today, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, officially swear in the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn.
This follows her landmark victory in the July 11 parliamentary rerun, where she secured 34,090 votes to defeat the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes—a razor-thin margin of 209 votes across all 281 polling stations.
It marks the first time the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Ablekuma North seat, breaking the NPP’s decades-long dominance in the constituency and delivering a major symbolic and political win for the opposition.
The rerun became necessary after the December 2024 general elections were marred by collation and verification issues.
While results from 18 of the initially disputed 37 polling stations were upheld, the Electoral Commission ordered fresh voting in the remaining 19 to conclude the process.
Despite the NPP’s official boycott of the rerun, Nana Akua Afriyie chose to participate after the Accra High Court dismissed her attempt to halt the process, arguing that she owed it to her supporters to contest.
The Electoral Commission’s certification of Aubynn’s victory brings an end to months of electoral uncertainty and legal wrangling, ushering in a new political era for Ablekuma North.
