President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that Alan Kyerematen will play a significant role in Ghana’s preparations to assume leadership of the African Union, following his endorsement by ECOWAS heads of state as the bloc’s preferred candidate for AU Chairperson in 2027.
The endorsement positions Ghana for greater influence on the continental stage and comes as Kyerematen convenes The African Summit in Accra.
Speaking on behalf of the President, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the summit is strategically timed, noting that its outcomes will help shape Ghana’s readiness for continental leadership.
Ablakwa said President Mahama views the ideas emerging from the summit as critical and has conveyed personal recognition to Kyerematen for his work on African integration.
He added that Ghana will rely on Kyerematen’s experience and the policy expertise of the Centre for Strategic African Development (CENSADEV) as it prepares for the AU role.
The summit, held under the theme “Building a New United Africa,” is focused on turning continental leadership into practical economic and development gains at a time when Africa faces both major opportunities and challenges.
