Ghana has taken reciprocal diplomatic action against Israel by deporting three Israeli nationals, days after Ghanaian citizens were subjected to what the government described as degrading treatment and unjustified deportation at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, December 10, the government said the decision followed the earlier detention and deportation of three Ghanaians by Israeli authorities, an incident that had already triggered strong protests from Accra.
According to the Ministry, the three Israelis were deported shortly after arriving in Ghana, as part of efforts to defend the dignity of Ghanaian nationals abroad. The Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Israeli Embassy in Accra was subsequently summoned, in the absence of Israel’s Ambassador, to receive formal notification of the government’s displeasure.
“The Government of Ghana has been compelled to retaliate,” the statement said, stressing that the move was taken after diplomatic engagement over what Ghana considers the “ill-treatment and unjustified deportation” of its citizens.
The development follows an earlier statement in which Ghana condemned Israeli authorities for detaining seven Ghanaians, including members of a parliamentary delegation, and subjecting them to what was described as “inhumane and traumatic treatment” before deporting some of them.
Despite the strong response, the Foreign Ministry indicated that both governments have agreed to de-escalate tensions. “Both Governments have agreed to resolve the matter amicably,” the statement noted.
Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its citizens wherever they are and maintaining respectful relations with partner countries, emphasizing that it expects Ghanaians to be treated with the same dignity accorded to foreign nationals on Ghanaian soil.
