Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has strongly dismissed claims that the United States intends to deport Salvadoran national Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Ghana, describing such reports as “false and misleading.”
In a firm statement on Thursday, Mr. Ablakwa clarified that Ghana has not entered into any agreement with US authorities to accept Abrego Garcia or any non-Ghanaian deportee.
“Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia. This has been directly and unambiguously conveyed to US authorities,” he said, stressing that the country’s immigration policy remains clear and guided by international law and humanitarian principles.
According to the Minister, Ghana had only agreed to assist with the return of a limited number of West African nationals under exceptional humanitarian circumstances — a gesture grounded in African solidarity — but not individuals outside the sub-region.
“Our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans purely on humanitarian grounds will not be expanded,” he reiterated.
Mr. Ablakwa urged international media outlets to exercise greater responsibility in their reporting, noting that Ghana’s name must not be dragged into diplomatic controversies involving individuals with no connection to the country.
He emphasized that Ghana remains committed to upholding its global reputation as a country that respects due process, human rights, and international cooperation — but will not allow itself to be a destination for deportees who are not its citizens.
