Tensions boiled over at the Akwatia lorry station during Tuesday’s by-election after a heated confrontation between National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman, Sofo Azorka, and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) counterpart, Osman Masawudu.
The incident occurred while Mr. Masawudu was addressing journalists. Mr. Azorka, who arrived on the scene, took exception to comments made about him and angrily confronted his political rival, sparking chaos among party supporters.
Police officers stationed at the polling center quickly stepped in to prevent the altercation from escalating further.
Security presence in Akwatia has been visibly heavy, with officers equipped with body cameras and others directly linked to a control center to monitor developments.
The Electoral Commission has assured voters of a peaceful and transparent process as over 46,000 registered voters cast their ballots to elect a new Member of Parliament.
Both the NDC and NPP are treating the contest as a major test of grassroots strength in the Eastern Region.
