The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has called for Ghana’s growing digital finance sector to translate improved access to financial services into better financial outcomes for households and businesses.
He made the call on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, when he welcomed Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, to Bank Square for the Financial Health Leadership Roundtable.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Asiama said Ghana had emerged as one of Africa’s leading digital finance markets, supported by interoperable payment systems, mobile money services and fintech innovation that had expanded access to financial services for millions of people.
He, however, stressed that access alone was not enough, noting that the next phase of the country’s financial inclusion agenda must focus on improving the financial health of individuals, households and businesses.
According to him, this would require greater access to savings, insurance, pensions, investment opportunities, financial literacy and productive, responsible credit.
Dr Asiama described Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) as the backbone of Ghana’s economy and called for technology, data and innovation to be used to address persistent financing challenges facing businesses.
He said these tools could help close the financing gap, reduce information asymmetries and enable viable businesses to access credit on fair and sustainable terms.
He particularly highlighted the need to improve financing opportunities for women-owned businesses and smallholder farmers, who often face difficulties accessing appropriate financial services.
The Governor urged stakeholders in the financial sector to move beyond discussions and translate their commitments into practical measures that would improve financial health across the country.
He called for clear priorities and coordinated action to ensure that Ghana’s progress in digital finance delivers meaningful benefits for individuals and businesses.
