President John Mahama is expected to meet key stakeholders on Thursday, October 8, 2026, to discuss the way forward for the Aayalolo contraflow system introduced to ease traffic congestion on some major corridors during the peak hours of the day
The meeting, scheduled for 1:00 p.m., will bring together officials from the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the Department of Urban Roads and the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Local Government and Religious Affiars, among others.
The discussions are expected to focus on how to sustain and improve the pilot contra-flow initiative, particularly during peak hours when traffic congestion is most severe.
The Minister for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mahama Ayariga speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, said there was a need to find a more sustainable approach to the implementation of the contra-flow system.
According to the Minister, the current arrangement cannot continue to rely on dispatch riders to facilitate the movement of Bus Rapid Transit(BRT) vehicles through the contra-flow lanes.
He said the roads would have to be re-engineered to create appropriate infrastructure for the effective and safe implementation of the system.
The Minister also pledged increased education for motorists and other road users to ensure compliance with the arrangements and promote the smooth operation of the contra-flow system.
According to him, the upcoming meeting is therefore expected to explore practical measures to improve the pilot exercise and determine how it can be sustained as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion in the Greater Accra Region.
