The government intends to sustain the contraflow traffic system as part of measures to improve mass movement in Ghana’s congested cities, Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga has announced.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5, Mr Ayariga said President John Dramani Mahama had approved the trial of the system, which has enabled thousands of commuters to move more quickly during peak periods using the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) “Ayalolo” buses.
He said the President was satisfied with the initial results and had scheduled a stakeholder meeting for October 7 to review the trials and determine how the system could be sustained.
“I want to assure you that contraflow as a way of rapid mass movement of commuters within our congested cities has come to stay until we have developed other ways of easy mobility in our big cities,” Mr Ayariga said.
He said the government would continue exploring additional solutions to urban mobility as part of efforts to improve public transport and reduce congestion in major cities.
