Dr Razak Kojo Opoku, a strategist has called for an amendment to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constitution to make the party’s presidential candidate its leader ahead of the 2028 general election.
According to Dr Opoku, the proposed amendment should be considered and adopted at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference scheduled for October 3, 2026.
He argued that the presidential candidate should automatically assume the position of party leader, particularly in periods when the party does not have a sitting President who is a member of the NPP.
Dr Opoku said where there is neither a presidential candidate nor a sitting NPP President, the National Chairman should assume the role of party leader until a new presidential candidate is elected.
“There is nothing wrong with making Dr Bawumia the Leader of the Party ahead of the 2028 general election,” he said.
He further proposed that if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia wins the 2028 presidential election, he should continue serving as the NPP’s leader.
However, in the event of a defeat, Dr Opoku said the National Chairman should immediately take over as party leader and remain in that position until the NPP elects a new presidential candidate for the 2032 general election.
The proposal comes ahead of the NPP’s October 3, 2026 National Delegates Conference, where delegates are expected to take decisions on the party’s leadership and organisational structures.
