Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has overtaken National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman General Asiedu Nketia in the party’s 2028 presidential race, according to a new Global InfoAnalytics poll.
Dr Forson now leads with 32%, up from 22% in July, while General Asiedu Nketia has dropped from 27% to 23%. Haruna Iddrisu has 5%, Julius Debrah 4%, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang 3%, Professor Joshua Alabi 2% and Eric Opoku 1%. Undecided delegates account for 28%.
The poll, conducted from September 11 to 13, 2026, shows Dr Forson leading in Ashanti, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Western, Western North and Bono regions.
General Asiedu Nketia leads in Ahafo, Bono East, North East, Savannah, Oti, Upper East, Upper West and Volta, while Haruna Iddrisu leads in the Northern Region.
Global InfoAnalytics said Dr Forson gained 7 percentage points in swing regions and 16 percentage points in Akan-dominated regions compared with the July poll.
In a head-to-head contest, Dr Forson also leads General Asiedu Nketia 41% to 30%, reversing their July positions of 33% and 34%, respectively.
However, General Asiedu Nketia maintains a strong lead over Haruna Iddrisu in a head-to-head contest, recording 41% to 11%, with 48% undecided.
The poll also found that 56% of delegates support the NDC choosing an economist to face Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in 2028. Among those who support the idea, 55% prefer Dr Forson, while 22% favour General Asiedu Nketia.
On whether General Asiedu Nketia should remain NDC chairman, 58% agreed, 21% disagreed and 20% had no opinion.
Interestingly, among delegates who support his continued chairmanship, 54% prefer Dr. Forson as the party’s presidential candidate, compared with 19% for General Asiedu Nketia.
The survey sampled 3,615 delegates through random-probability telephone sampling and recorded a 93% completed-response rate.
The findings mark the first time Dr. Forson has moved ahead of General Asiedu Nketia in the poll, signalling a notable shift in the NDC’s internal 2028 contest.
