The Ghana Police Service has arrested and interdicted General Corporal Robert Koranteng in connection with the death of 23-year-old Ivan Baidoo on the Tema Motorway.
The officer was identified following initial investigations into a viral video concerning the incident, which occurred on August 27, 2026.
Baidoo, a second-year law student at Central University, died after an accident involving a YANGO-operated motorbike on the Tema Motorway.
His death has since triggered calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The latest development means the police officer linked to the incident is now in custody while investigations continue.
The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has taken steps to establish the full circumstances that led to Baidoo’s death, while the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has been tasked with examining the conduct of General Corporal Koranteng.
The Police Service said the investigations are being conducted separately to establish both the circumstances surrounding the death and whether the officer’s conduct complied with professional standards.
The Service said, “The Ghana Police Service assures the public that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigations.”
Baidoo’s family had earlier petitioned the CID for a full-scale investigation into his death, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding the crash and calling for accountability.
According to the family’s petition, Baidoo was travelling on a YANGO motorbike from Old Ashongman to East Legon when the incident occurred.
The rider, Samuel Arthur Wesley, told investigators that a police patrol team member riding another motorcycle pursued them from the UPSA-Legon junction towards the Tema Motorway.
The family has maintained that more questions need to be answered about what happened before and after the crash.
Baidoo’s death has also generated public concern following the circulation of video footage related to the incident, prompting the Police Service to begin preliminary investigations.
The Police have assured the public that the outcome of the ongoing investigations will determine the appropriate action to be taken.
