Former Vice President and flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has engaged the national leadership of the Junior Doctors Association (JDA), the Federation of Ghana Medical Students Association (FGMSA) and presidents of Medical Students’ Associations from across the country to discuss challenges confronting young medical professionals and students.
The engagement, held on Thursday, focused on a range of issues affecting medical training and the professional development and welfare of young doctors and medical students.
Key concerns discussed included training conditions, timely postings, welfare and career progression.
Dr Bawumia described the engagement as an open and honest conversation, stressing the importance of listening to the experiences and concerns of young medical professionals and students.
He said the young doctors and medical students would play a critical role in the future of Ghana’s healthcare system and, therefore, their perspectives should inform policies being developed today.
“These are the brilliant minds who will carry the weight of Ghana’s healthcare system tomorrow, and their voices must shape our policies today,” he said.
The engagement provided an opportunity for representatives of the various medical Associations to share their experiences and highlight issues requiring attention to improve the professional and academic environment for young people pursuing careers in medicine.
Dr Bawumia expressed appreciation to the young doctors and student leaders for their participation and the insights shared during the discussions.
The meeting forms part of efforts to deepen engagement with stakeholders in Ghana’s healthcare sector and better understand the challenges facing the next generation of medical professionals.
