NPP challenges Ashanti executives to deliver 1.5m votes for Bawumia in 2028

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has put its newly elected Ashanti Regional executives on a major electoral assignment, setting a target of more than 1.5 million votes for the party in the 2028 general elections.

NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong says the Ashanti Region must lead the party’s campaign to regain power after its weaker performance in the 2024 elections.

He gave the target to the new regional executive committee, led by Odeneho Kwaku Appiah (COKA), during a thanksgiving service in Kumasi on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Mr Kodua said the region’s performance would be critical to the NPP’s chances of winning the 2028 presidential election for its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“The victory of NPP in 2028 will be determined by the Ashanti Region. We’re therefore giving you (COKA and executives) a target of more than 1.5 million votes,” he said.

The target represents a clear challenge to the new regional leadership to strengthen the party’s presence at the grassroots and win back supporters who did not vote for the NPP in 2024.

Mr Kodua acknowledged the decline in the party’s votes between the 2020 and 2024 elections and said the trend could not continue if the NPP wanted to return to government.

“You are all aware that NPP depreciated in the votes we obtained in the 2020 election as compared to 2024, and we need to change the narrative,” he said.

He therefore called on the regional executives to turn the renewed support for their administration into stronger electoral mobilisation across the region.

“On behalf of the national executives of the party, I’m tasking Ashanti Regional executives to work extra hard to maximise votes for Dr Bawumia,” he added.

Beyond increasing its vote share, Mr Kodua said the party must first maintain unity within its regional and constituency structures.

He noted that the 47 constituency executives in Ashanti Region had supported the newly elected regional administration.

According to him, maintaining that support will be important as the party begins the long process of rebuilding its electoral base.

“I’m expecting you to build on this support and bring everyone on board to ensure a resounding victory for NPP in 2028,” he said.

The comments come as the NPP begins laying the groundwork for the 2028 elections, with the Ashanti Region expected to remain a major focus of its national campaign strategy.

For the new regional executives, the immediate task will be to translate the party’s traditional strength in the region into a higher vote total while rebuilding support ahead of the next election.

The target was announced during a thanksgiving service at Gracefields Temple-Havillah City Temple, Ahodwo, Kumasi, held under the theme “A Heart of Gratitude; A Life of Praise.”

The service brought together current and former party executives, former ministers, former state institution chief executives, and incumbent and former Members of Parliament.

The newly elected regional executives used the occasion to express gratitude following their election, while Mr Kodua congratulated them and urged them to focus on rebuilding the party ahead of 2028.
