Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has disclosed that NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is preparing to announce a new and improved policy package aimed at addressing the concerns of Ghana’s cocoa farmers.
Speaking at Duayaw Nkwanta in the Ahafo Region on Friday, September 4, 2026, where he joined the MP for Tano North, Dr. Gideon Boako, for the presentation of 84 motorised spraying machines to cocoa farmer groups, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said the proposed policy would offer cocoa farmers a different approach to the challenges confronting the sector.
The machines were presented to support disease control and improve productivity among farmers.
Mr. Annoh-Dompreh’s comments come after a nationwide engagement with cocoa farmers by a Minority parliamentary team he led. The team gathered concerns and recommendations from farmers and subsequently presented its findings to Dr. Bawumia in June.
Dr. Bawumia referred the report to the NPP’s Policy Committee on Agriculture, Food Security and Agribusiness for further technical assessment, consultations with experts and the development of costed policy alternatives. Reports on the initiative indicate that Bawumia has assured that “the cocoa farmer will not be abandoned.”
The anticipated policy announcement comes at a critical time for the cocoa industry, with farmers facing concerns over producer prices, input costs, disease, ageing farms and declining production.
The current producer price for the 2026 light crop season is GH¢2,587 per 64-kilogramme bag, equivalent to GH¢41,392 per tonne.
Against this background, Annoh-Dompreh is positioning the forthcoming Bawumia proposal as a potential alternative that would respond directly to farmers’ concerns and seek to make cocoa farming more sustainable and attractive
