The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reached an agreement with Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to continue as head coach of the Black Stars.

The GFA said Queiroz’s initial mandate, which included leading Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expired a few weeks ago.

However, following discussions between the Association, the coach and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the parties have agreed on a new coaching mandate.

The new arrangement will take effect from the upcoming international window.

Queiroz, 73, took charge of the Black Stars in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March.

He was initially appointed on a four-month contract to oversee Ghana’s participation in the 2026 World Cup.

According to reports by GhanaSoccerNet, negotiations over a new contract advanced after the GFA, with support from the Ministry of Sports, settled outstanding payments owed to Queiroz and members of his technical team for their World Cup campaign.

The settlement reportedly cleared a major obstacle to the negotiations and paved the way for the Portuguese coach to remain in charge.

The GFA said Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and familiarity with the Black Stars make him well positioned to lead the team into its next phase.

His continued appointment will see him guide Ghana into the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars are scheduled to open their qualifying campaign away against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24, 2026, at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27.

Ghana will be seeking to return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing the previous edition staged in Morocco.

The GFA said further details concerning Queiroz’s new mandate and the Black Stars’ upcoming programme will be announced in due course.

The Association said it and the coach will now focus on building “a successful new phase for Ghana on the international stage.”
