The presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his condolences to the chiefs and people of Dagbon following the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia described the late Dagbon King as a leader whose reign helped guide the kingdom towards peace, unity and progress during a challenging period in its history.

He said Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II ascended the Dagbon throne at a time when the kingdom was recovering from years of division, but through wisdom and patience, helped unite families and restore harmony.

“His reign was short but greatly impactful. Through his wise leadership, he united families once broken and healed a society greatly fractured before him,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

The former Vice President also praised the late Yaa Naa for balancing tradition with modern leadership, noting his commitment to advocating for development projects and the advancement of Dagbon.

Dr. Bawumia said he personally benefited from the counsel and guidance of the late King during his tenure as Vice President and later as the NPP’s presidential candidate.

He recalled his visits to the Gbewaa Palace, describing them as opportunities to receive wisdom and direction from the revered traditional ruler.

The NPP flagbearer said the passing of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II represents a significant loss not only to Dagbon but also to Ghana as a whole.

He extended his sympathies to the immediate family of the late King, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and the entire nation, praying for comfort during the period of mourning.
