The Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to leveraging natural gas as a key transition fuel to drive energy security, industrialisation, and economic growth across West Africa.
Mr. Gyan-Mensah made the remarks while representing the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, at the opening ceremony of the West Africa Gas Summit (WAGS) 2026 held in Accra.
The summit brought together policymakers, energy experts, industry leaders, and stakeholders from across the sub-region to discuss opportunities and strategies for advancing gas development and strengthening regional energy cooperation.
Among the distinguished participants were Venerable Tsatsu Tsikata, former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Chairman of WAGS 2026; Chafari Kanya Hanawa, Director General of the West African Gas Pipeline Authority (WAGPA); Ed Ubong, Coordinating Director for Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative; and Alioune Gueye, Chief Executive Officer of Groupe PETROSEN.
Addressing delegates at the summit, the Deputy Minister highlighted Ghana’s strategic vision for the gas sector, describing natural gas as a critical component of the country’s energy transition agenda.
He noted that beyond serving as a cleaner energy source, gas has the potential to enhance energy security, support industrial expansion, create employment opportunities, promote regional integration, and improve livelihoods across the West African sub-region.
Mr. Gyan-Mensah stressed the importance of collaboration among West African countries to harness the region’s abundant gas resources and unlock their full economic and developmental benefits.
