Tensions have flared in parts of the Dormaa East District in the Bono Region following the death of a 23-year-old man, Kwabena Agyei, suspected to be involved in illegal mining activities.
Police say the deceased was found lifeless at Akontanim on April 13, with visible signs of assault on his body. Initial investigations suggest he was part of a group engaged in illegal mining when they were confronted by a taskforce from the Dormaa Traditional Area.
The incident triggered unrest, with groups believed to be illegal miners blocking major roads, including the Dormaa Ahenkro–Berekum and Berekum–Dormaa highways, by burning tyres and obstructing traffic.
Some of the individuals reportedly attacked police vehicles during the disturbances, prompting a joint police and military response to restore order.
Security has since been reinforced in the area, and calm has been restored, while investigations continue to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Dormaa Ahenkro Presbyterian Hospital morgue as police continue their probe and urge residents to remain peaceful.
