A key suspect in the murder and disappearance of two youths at Kandeu in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region has died while assisting police with investigations.
The Upper West Regional Police Command identified the deceased as 35-year-old Abu Tijani, popularly known as “Master One,” a youth leader from Wechau.
According to police, Tijani was arrested on Saturday, July 25, 2026, after allegedly evading arrest since May 11.
Police said the suspect admitted during interrogation to involvement in the crime and disclosed that the bodies of the victims were initially buried at Wechau before being exhumed and reburied across the Black Volta River in Burkina Faso with the help of accomplices.
He subsequently led investigators to the alleged initial burial site, about three kilometres west of Wechau, but no human remains were found.
Police said Tijani later complained of severe headaches while being escorted to assist investigators in locating an alleged accomplice.
He was rushed to the Seventh-day Adventist Hospital in Wa, where he was pronounced dead at about 4:37 p.m.
His body has been deposited at the Upper West Regional Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, has appealed for calm as investigations continue to track down other suspects linked to the killings.
