A major fire swept through a warehouse complex at the Tema Industrial Area in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving some firefighters injured as personnel battled for hours to bring the blaze under control.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the commercial fire involved a takeaway warehouse and a rubber warehouse and factory.
In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the GNFS said the fire broke out at about 12:40 a.m., prompting the deployment of four fire tenders from the Tema Industrial, Devtraco, Motorway and Free Zones fire stations.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby facilities before eventually extinguishing it.
However, the operation was not without casualties.
The GNFS disclosed that several firefighters sustained injuries during the firefighting exercise, including one officer who was struck after part of a wall collapsed.
“Unfortunately, some firefighters sustained some injuries including the portions of the wall falling on a firefighter. He is currently being treated at the Tema General Hospital.”
The Service said although the fire has been extinguished, firefighters remain at the scene carrying out salvage and overhaul operations to prevent any possible re-ignition.
“The fire has finally been extinguished but firefighters are still at the scene salvaging and overhauling.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and the GNFS said further details will be communicated as investigations continue.
